The natural progression of selling tax reverted properties is to sell the deeds to the properties of which the county obtains ownership. The Indiana General Assembly has recently created new law to allow the sale of certificates by the commissioners. Of course, SRI was active in that legislation and as a result, we are on the formative edge of that process. SRI conducts both deed sales for commissioners as well as the new certificate sales. SRI is the only company in Indiana that has conducted these certificate sales. Again, our expertise in the area of tax sales has led us to an unequalled expertise in the area of commissioners sales, too.

>> EXCISE TAX DISTRIBUTION

Indiana Code 6-6-5 imposes an annual license excise tax upon vehicles in lieu of the ad valorem property tax. Vehicles upon which excise tax is imposed are not assessed as personal property. The tax is very significant to counties. When compared to other taxes, the amount of effort required to collect and distribute these taxes is proportionately higher than real property taxes. Excise tax must be distributed to taxing unit of the residence of the vehicle owner. The Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) requires the owner to identify the township of residence. This is not enough. There are many tax units in addition to townships entitled to the income from this tax. This method deprives many towns and villages from their rightful share of the excise tax. Some county Assessors review all registrations and assign the correct tax unit. Even this extra effort often cannot identify all income to the rightful tax unit. After this time consuming effort, the Auditor must total and balance the amounts with the BMV. SRI has a better way! The county Auditor and Assessor have no staff effort or time required for the monthly distribution. Their only requirement is to notify SRI when a street is created or closed. This is very nominal compared to the current effort and cost of distribution that in many counties is inaccurate. The SRI way is a better way. Call Brad Engler for more details at (800) 800-9588.
